I have a '65 F100 swb and I have ordered all new side moulding.
Question: How do you remove the the piece on the cowl (the piece between the hood and the door). I think it has clips on the back of the moulding like the other pieces that secures with a nut but can't figure out how to get to it.
It's been awhile since I've removed the molding from my parts truck. But I believe there's an access panel in the cab that you have to go through. There are 2 bolts holding it in place. I think I had to use a box wrench to get to them though.
Thx for the referral...I have seen the cowl molding held on using 2 different kind of clips. To get to them...if you have a younger son/helper with smaller arms that would be a plus...I got mine off my donor cab...I went in thru floor vents....take them out as well as upper inner fender cover plate on inside( the screws from the plate will tear ya up otherwise...If yours has the delux heater, remove the flex boot connecting to cowl...goes from square at heater to round at upper kick panel area...after boot is off(5/16"screws) there is a plastic black ring bolted to cab....pull it too....you need all the arm twisting room you can get...some of the moldings use 2 kinds of clips...the fwd one is usually a pop in spring clip, the rear is usually same kinda clip used on rear hood or fwd door moldings....fastener is same as bed moldings, etc. 3/8 as I recall...if truck has factory antenna, undo from radio and pull a bit into cowl area to give you more arm/hand/ tool room. i used a 1/4 drive ratchet with a 3" extension...make sure its a ratchet that doesnt lose the extension of the ratchet....a pain to pull out to fetch extension/socket out of bottom of kick panel. before you go after the nut on clip, feel to see how clean or rusty threads are on clip....clean/lube as needed before trying to remove nut. When nut it off, carefully pry molding back away from cab and slide/twist clip to remove from molding...the fwd clip is a strong clip if its like what I have seen....about 1-1 1/4 square clip...4 prongs each 'leg' about 3/8 wide where it goes into lip of molding. What I have done is get rear clip out so you have a bit of room to twist and maneuver it off....one other thing you may try, I havent as room is tight and your basicly blind, going by braille is get a pair of pliers and see if you can squeeze the spring tabs on clip I/S of cowl and get it off....If you get lucky, let us know Same for left side....harder area as you got ign switch and wiring and all....undo battery just in case....As for going in thru the cowl access covers, I have yet to get one off....65s and earlier are screwed and sealed in, 66 are rubber plugs....a little way to differentiate 65 and 6 cabs aside from gas pedal mounting too...if you cant get molding off after nut style clip is out of there, what i have done, depending if I wanna save mldg or not is slide molding a bit fore and aft....gets 40 yrs of crud out of the lip on bottom and makes it a bit looser on clip....if your repainting truck, carefully go under molding in clip area and carefully see if you can pull it away...bottom easier....less paint damage likely too plus stronger area as to avoiding possible dings.
this clip if sound is strong for the tiny piece of aluminum it holds on....if you can get it to pull away and 'help' it lose some of its spring thus narrowing its overall width you should be able to pick up from bottom of molding in clip area thus lifting top lip off and clear of clip, pull away and lower and molding is in your hands and then you can see what a pain in the butt that clip is
hehe.
that clip was never meant to bve removed , but they probably werent imagining someone would be restoring it,etc 40 yrs later....The other way i have seen done, only once though is they got bright and used a nut type clip up front as well....I hope you get lucky with the easier type clam myself...
I am gonna look up clip pt number and post in a bit....I hope this helps and Happy New Year to all and happy 40th b-day this year to our beloved 65s
My 65 parts book shows there as being 4 of nut type clips...C5OZ-16A076-A...its called a retainer...the nuts pt number is 359606-S8 (MM291A) 10-24 threads hex nut its called...
