Yep, take it to the machinist and once they have everything prepped, they will either give you the information to purchase the rebuild kit or order it themselves.

Most machine shops will want the new pistons "in hand" before doing the bore. They will want to measure the pistons for a precise side clearence. This measurement is dependant upon several factors, mainly piston type and taper. Hyperuetectics run slightly tighter than standard cast pistons and much tighter than forged. The most logical route would be to take the engine to the machine shop, let them clean and measure everything, as well as check for cracks. If everything checks out, they can order your parts for you. In most cases the machinist can buy the parts more cheaply than the consumer can. If you have no experience in engine assembly, let the shop do it for you. That is, after all, what they do. Good luck with the build....

twinscrew the shop here will rough bore it to make sure it will clean up at a given overbore, before ordering pistons (they basically bore it to .003 under in my example they bored my 460 block to 4.317 for a .060 over bore) then when you get the pistons he hones to size as per the manufacturors specs

Thanks monsterbaby. I was afraid that noone point this out. You should never just pick an oversize and buy pistons before at the very least, micing the block. A good machinist will do just like you say and bore the cylinders just shy of the first o/s to make sure that they will clean up for that o/s.

For that matter, it might be that the machinist mics the block and recommends a rering job. Take the block and crank to the machinist for measurment, and of course take him the heads for the headwork, at the very least a valve job.

Bronzewall guides would be a really good thing to do to these heads. Don't settle for just knurling.

Good luck,
Doc
