I took my 87xlt out to plow for the first time yesterday. When I was done it was getting dark so I turned on the lights. Well you can guess what I'm going to say? The lights were very dim! I had replaced the ALT about 7 months ago. So I called the parts store & received a new one free. I put it in & still the truck is not charging! What else could be wrong? Alt has Volt Reg built in. Where do I go next?
Check and clean the battery and the connections (both ends), especially the ground. Put a voltmeter on the battery terminals to see how much voltage is going in when the engine is running. Should be about 14 volts. If it is 14, the alternator is working. If not, its probably wiring to the alternator. Keep us posted.
