Question slight knocking sound

my 84 300I6 has a small knocking sound from the front of the engine. i thought at first either the ac compressor or steering pump was making it, but they are not the problem. i wouldn't think it would be the crank bearings because the engine has only 93000 miles and has had a decently easy life. the knocking increases with rpm but not directly, it lags behind when reving the engine. does anybody have a clue as to what this might be

Eric

I had an 83 F-150 with the 300-6 and I had the same problem. As far as I could tell, it was the timing gears clashing together. I might be wrong, so maybe someone else could tell you different.

Cam drive gears usually whine or growl, but could knock I guess. I had a slight knock in mine some time ago, fiinally found out it was the fuel pump.

Make a listening tool out of a piece of broom handle or pine closet rod (pipe works too but it's winter) and hold it tight to your ear and various points on the motor. This will help you locate the source of this noise.

You will be amazed at how this amplifies and isolates the sounds.

Watch the fan cuz ya know the engine has to be running to do this.

Another idea is a cut off piece of old garden hose.
