I was wondering why...

I allways thought tires would wear faster on the back, than on the front!
That is one reason to rotate them around 5,000mi. or so.

I have a 97 expedition 5.4 EB 4X4 and have experienced the wear on the front more than the back. The wear is even somewhat on the tire and I experienced a little rounding on the outside about the fourth rotation. I was told by the tire dealer all oversized tires will round off or cup as he put it in a few months.

I took care of the wear on the outside by having the tires flipped on the rim. This put the wear on the inside and evened out the tread on all my tires.

I was told it was common place for the Expeditions 5.4L tires to wear on the front due to the outstanding front end excessive weight factor.
Does anyone have any knowledge on this? ThX.

The fronts have always worn faster on my vehicles (regardless of which wheels are powered).

The front tires bear the largest forces in driving. Stopping & turning.

Thx.

Well you have a point there...I was heavy footed at one time back when and noticed a few slick tires on the back of my vehicles.

I can't afford to give "jackrabbit" starts on my Expedition, I creep along to squeeze 12mpg out of it as it is... if I dogged it hard like "back when" I would probably get sick at the mpg and have to go out and feed the birds.

My soninlaw has a Ford Cobra and twice the hp I do, and gets twice the mileage to! Thats ok though I like my al bah tross...Expy.

on all my cars the front have worn faster. they've been front wheel drive (up until the expy), but i've always attributed the front wear mainly to corning - especially for those of us who corner fast.

I was using the same thoughts, "pulling tires wear faster"... so far it seems front tire wear is using more rubber than the back. If you are driving down the expressway all the time, I would argue my point...

But...there is one consolation "one is never to old to learn" all these years I thought the back without doubt would wear faster!

Well I guess I'm ready to go, I know it all now
