Which Rear End do I have?

Hello to all the good people of FTE I have another question, I was wondering which rear end is in my truck and how I could figure out which one it is. It is a 1986 F-150 5.0 2wd longbed.

Thumbs up

The 8.8 has a large cover that bolts onto the backside of the rear end assembly. The 9 inch has a bolt-in carrier assembly.

You can also check the rear axle code on the ID sticker on your drivers door pillar. Let us know what you find!

Bruce, the owner of 2-8.8's.

I crawled under the truck and it is the 9 inch. Is the 9 inch better than the 8.8?

Without a doubt the 9 inch is stronger overall. It has a one piece steel welded housing with a beefy cast iron center section. The 8.8 has a cast iron housing with pressed in steel axle tubes, and a removeable rear cover The axle shafts themselves, in my opinion are pretty much equal. The draw back of the 8.8 is the axle shafts are held in place by C-clips, and the 9 inch shafts are retained by a flange that bolts directly to the axle housing. If I had my choice I would have a 9 inch rearend in my truck, but the 8.8 has held up very well.
