gas problems

My truck is an 87 f150 with dual gas tanks. When i purchased the truck, the rear tank had a hole drilled into it to drain varnished gas at one point in time, so only the front tank can be used.
For the last few weeks ive been getting terrible gas mileage.I looked around and noticed that gas was dripping from the hole in the rear tank and basically streams out when its on a hill.
Im not too sure what would cause this? The truck has a selector switch that hasnt left 'FRONT' since ive owned it, so id think that would cut off the rear tank completely, unless theyre connected to eachother by something other than your main fuel lines. Any ideas?

There was a recall on certain trucks several years ago to install check valves to prevent fuel from coming out of one tank and filling the other. Read a post the other day where someone said their dealer had told them the recall had expired?? This person was questioning how a recall would expire. Maybe there is a time limit on them I don't know. Anyway, you might get your dealer to run your VIN number and at least see if it applied to your truck. If indeed it has expired they might be able to tell you what parts it required.

Looks like the fuel selector valve ( under truck by drivers seat) is bad on your truck causing the fuel to go to the rear tank. It happens with the 87 to 89 trucks, all have the same part. You can maybe add two pieces of rubber fuel hoses one 5/16" and one 3/8" to the rear of the fuel selector. The two bottom fuel lines go the the rear tank. Add two bolts with JB Weld to the end of the 2" long rubber hoses and add four hose clamps. Did it on my 87 for a five months worked great. Should just be a temp. fix until you replace the selector valve. Runs about 53.00 at a small ford dealer. Its only a ford part. Yours does not have a wire to it like the newer trucks do. After market ones have a wire and are not a direct fit for your truck. Maybe sand the rear tank hole with sand paper and and JB Weld the the rear tank hole when empty, or park on a steep hill, while filling the hole.

The selecter valve was the problem. I blocked off the rear tank like you suggested and it did the job . When i change my rear pump ill switch out the selector, but until then this seems fine. Thankyou
