Hey guys!

I changed the plugs and tried a few other things with little change. Funny, the gap on the plugs was more than 100 mils and it still ran nearly the same. Yikes! Anyway, I thought about the grounding of the intake manifold that was mentioned prior in this thread. I tried an experiment using a jumper cable running from my negative battery terminal to the intake manifold and the problem became virtually non-existant. Bizzarre! So, now I'm going to cover the bases and make a grounding harness that ties a few points on the body, a few points on the engine and the computer all directly to the negative battery teminal. It may take care of some other issues as well. Thanks guys!

That sounds logical enough. If you don't have a good engine ground, then the plugs aren't going to fire properly.

Back to the DIS operation though, during starting only one coil pack fires and during normal operation all 8 fire. This is just to lessen the load on the electrical system before the alternator starts turning. Someone made mention of the extra set of plugs only firing when called for by the EEC. That may be true for an EDIS (95+)system, but in standard DIS, there's only a basic SPOUT signal to the DIS module from the EEC just as there is with regular TFI. The DIS module "knows" which coils to fire based on the combined inputs from the crank and camshaft position sensors.
