Does anyone have any opinions they want to share on the ram style power steering for a 55 F100? It seems like a lot of work and expense to go to a Toyota box and all of the related hardware. I kinda like the idea of the stock steering column. I just don't want to cut up anything I don't have to. Anybody have any close-up pictures of the ram style power steering set-up. I'd like to see how it's made-up; especially the control valve. Who actually manufactures these units? I have a power steering set up from my old 67 Mustang Fastback GTA. Hmmmm, I wonder..
Good question, wish I knew the answer to that. I have a 56 M100 that I had a Mercury car clip put on to get away from that. Also I wanted dual exhaust and pdb.
FOMOKO1, I wish I had a Mercury truck. They are somewhat rare and all to cool, especially the MERCURY lettering on the tail gate. PDB and dual exhaust shouldn't be a problem; except for the coin involved. But then again, that's almost everyone's problem. Enjoy
The control box is part of the replacement drag link where it connects to the pitman arm. Either way you'll still need a power steering pump. IMHO I didn't think the Toyota conversion was any more difficult to do and a lot cleaner setup, as well as significantly cheaper if buying both all new. I have a complete ram system as well as a stock box and column I replaced with the Toyota setup I'd sell cheap.

The Mercury's aren't particularly rare, just have to go to Canada for them. Ford sold their trucks in Canada under the Mercury banner.

If these trucks are not so rare why is it so hard to find parts for them? There was less than 7000 1956 Mercury trucks produced so that is fairly rare compared to Ford trucks in the same year. I am still looking for the hood letters(Mercury) for my 56 and am ready to give up. Some one filled in the hood and that looks to be the best option right now.
To FOMOKO1, I wouldn't fill in anything until you explored ALL options. Ever think about casting your own letters/emblems? A buddy of mine cast some emblems for his 66 mustang, and they turned out great. Something to consider. Enjoy.
Sorry, I meant compared to Mercury trucks here in the states. The problem IMHO is that there isn't enough demand for Mercury specific parts, trim etc for the repro people to produce them. We can build an entire 56 F100 brand new from catalogs. You also have the added problem of the toll your weather takes on 50 year old sheet metal.

I won`t fill anything in, that was already done when I got the truck. I did pick up an unmolested hood with the openings for the letters just in case . Not looking too good but I am in no hurry, lots else to do, the truck is all apart for restoration work. Looked real good but there was some rust in the cab floor, cab corners, etc so on to the rotisory and out came the sandblaster. Got the cab floor /corners back in real metal, just waiting for warmer temps to paint the frame. It will be a long project so I have lots of time to find the letters. Saved the original frame and now have a clip from a 80 Merc car , it can be put back to stock if needed. As for casting the letters that sounds beyond what I could try as I have never done any casting and I would want the letters perfect, better than I could make. Maybe better off waiting and hoping. The letters would really set the truck off no doubt.

I could build an entire new Merc truck as well but it would not have any Mercury emblems. LOL! There is no dif in a Ford/Mercury truck besides the lettering on the hood, tailgate and the streering wheel as well as the door data plate. Don`t know if the serial #`s were a different from the Ford trucks. Some of our trucks are still good enough to restore as the farmer`s trucks did not get used too much, especially in the winter , it is only in the last 15/20 years the salt has been used in any great quantity. By then most of these neat trucks had been parked. Just picked up a 71 F350,shows 71,000 miles and it has so very little rust that it is tempting to fix it up as well.
