Your friends are incorrect. Just because a speaker can handle more wattage doesn't mean that it draws more power. There would be no harm to your head unit by installing those Pio's.
What your friends might be thinking about are Ohms. The typical car speaker is 4-8 ohms. If you have no idea what I am talking about, ohms refer to resistance. The higher the ohm rating, the more the resistance. The only way you could damage your head unit would be to run speakers with a lower ohm rating than the HU could handle because lower ohm ratings do draw more power.
Reading over what I just wrote confused me...hopefully someone will come along who can explain it better than I can.
