I can't be the only person this has happened to...My wife bought me an aluminum crossover box for my 2000 Ranger for Christmas (How cool is that? ). Anyway I drilled a hole in the center of each side and used two topper-style clamps to bolt it on. Worked great, but I didn't think about the stake pockets when I drilled. Ended up about an inch and a half farther back than I had wanted, but still looks fine. I didn't want to drill any more holes. By the way the box is about 17 inches wide. Just a friendly heads-up...
Lowes makes some brackets for $20 so you dont have to drill holes in the side rails of the bed . Just drill 2 holes in the box & the brackets clamp to the bed where it folds downon the inside . And they are really easy to remove if needed
I think I should have been a little more clear. The holes I drilled are in the toolbox, not the bed rails. The problem was that the clamps are wider than say, a j-bolt would have been. They were bumping into the stake pockets underneath the rail. No big deal, but if I had to do it over again I'd make my holes a little bit off-center(toward the tailgate) so the toolbox could be closer to the front of the bed. You're right though, the clamps work great. Hope this helps somebody...
lol Glad to hear you didnt do what i thought you had done . This guy i used to work for bought a new truck & new tool box & drilled through the bed rails & run screws in the bed then we was at lowes one day & showed him the brackets he bout wet himself , i really thought he was gonna cry . but glad you didnt make that mistake, but still dont leave anything in them valuable cause they are easily broken into . Unless you add more locks to the corners, thats where they pull up the edges & take what they want
I have had the same bedliner for three Rangers now, because it's secure and takes a heck of a beating, and I've bolted my toolbox to that. It's worked well, since I don't keep too much in there but tiedowns and some emergency items. I just measured where the stake pockets were and placed the holes in the toobox there. Used very large wall anchors to attach to the bedliner, washer on the toobox, and voila, a poor man's fix.
I have the top of the bed plastic covers - the things on the top edge around the whole bed, on my 98 4x4. They are held to the bed by about 5 bolts on each side. So i just took out the first bolt on each side. drilled holes into the toolbox to match up with the bolt holes, and then got some longer bolts with the same thread, and some washers and bolted it right down. Oh, I also used the sticky double sided foam tape under it to, just so it wouldn't squeak around and scratch up the plastic bed lip covers.
I have a bedliner as well, the type that have a lip that goes up over the bed rails. They have hole cut in them for the stake pockets, when I installed my toolbox I just bought a set of the cheap stake pocket tie-downs, the ones with a toggle bolt that catches on the inside of the stake pockets. I just drilled new hole in the bottom of the box that lined up with the stake pockets, and assembled the tie-downs inside the tool box. I can remove the box in minutes with no tools if I need to take it out to carry a longer item, and no extra holes drilled in the bed rail. -TD
