My column shifter, which I had just gotten used to , broke. I can't go from reverse to first. The shifter doesn't move the rods, the transmission shifts fine on the case. I have a friend handily enough donating a floor shift conversion, Mr Gasket variety. Anyone have any experience? Fixing the column or the floorconversion, I welcome all comments of opinions or tips and tricks for hole cutting. I figure to mount the bracket before cutting a pilot hole in the middle and going out with a sawzall and cleaning up with a dremel. I have that much figured out. I may modify the old slot shifter connections to work on the shifter bracket with allthread. (I am missing one link rod in the kit....)
All conversation commentary or other certainly welcome!!!!!
LMC Trucks ($$$$) has parts - if you do go with the floor shift, don't use all thread it's not stiff enough - get some bar stock and bend it to make a rod.
I am told that MG shifter is not as good as Hurst - not sure, they look like the same design to me.
It is a basically simple install. Seems you have most figured out now.
I would agree, mount the bracket then cut hole to fit. Only big enough, that way less hole to cover with boot.
As for shift rods...DON'T use all thread. Like mentioned it is flimsy and will not last long. I would email MR. Gasket about possible replacements before starting. Yes, the Hurst model is a MUCH better unit. It uses a real shifter assembly, NOT like Mr.G version. It is pricey though. If on a budget, use what you have and get a real shift rod.
Over the years I have collected a nice assortment of shift rods and with a welder I can make anything I need. Don't make it cheap/flimsy because it WILL let you down when you least expect it.
I was going to actually just use allthread for the adjustment part, then weld the slot thing from the column on it in the right length so I wouldnt have to use the fiddly thinngs they give to replace the levers on the tranny case.
Thanks guys I was beginning to think I was alone here....
i swapped a toploader 3sp from a '77 e-100 into my old '82 f150 when the clark 4sp blewup. its a good idea to buy the hurst indy universal shifter for the 3sp. i used the mr. gasket pos first to save some money...and it wouldn't give positive shifts. the hurst indy kit almost feels like a stock shifter when tuned properly. one note of caution: the pattern for the floor shifter is reverse-down to-first
over-up to second-down to third
the first gear to second shift is hard when you are powershifting b/c if you dont angle the shifter to the right enough...you might bump into the reverse gear at like 30mph. and that isn't a good noise when you do it.
but it is a good conversion when you get the clearencing of the floorpan and shifter brackets on right
