alright, i have a kenwood KAC-728S amplifier. it claims "600 watts maximum power", and i blew up the right channel a while back... so im running a couple of 12s off the left channel. i have a 12 or possibly 8 gauge power wire providing the juice. my question is: would a 4 or 0 gauge wire be better? i was told that my small wire may be what is killing my alternator.
thanks
I Dont think the power wire is the problem. My friend had the same problem when he put in a small 10" with a 220 Watt amp. It may be the way the amp is wired, cuz he never hooked up the one wire to the head to turn off the amp when the head was off(I forget the name of the wire) This could be causing the drain on ur battery.
It the amount of power your pulling. I was pulling too much power with a 1000 Watt amp when i had my Bronco, and i would loose battery power.
What do you mean killing your alternator...Like really ruining it and you having to replace it?
The KAC-728S is 150Watts X 2@2ohms or 100Watts X 2@ 4 ohms so it's no really drawing a huge amount of power. The way you have yours wired, 2 12's (4ohm?) into one channel would send even less power to the subs...~75Watts to each.
Thats the wire i was talkin about, its the one i can never rember. But if its not that it just might be that you are sucking out more power than your alt can handle.
by ruining my alternator i mean... my truck had some trouble starting up, so i got the batt. and the alt. checked with those machines they have at auto zone. while i was at auto zone i saw a guy i know whom said he was once a car stereo install-guy, and he thought my small power wire going to the amplifier was probably killing my battery.
and i know that the amp puts out less wattage to each sub the way i have it wired, but it sounds a ton better than pushing all the watts to one speaker!

If you dont have light dim when the bass hits? You prolly have a short elsewhere. If you DO have light dim.....please keep reading.
I would guess the left side failed because of one of a million reasons. Wiring not one of them in this instance. Kenwood is not exactly known for its durability. Alts are designed to run your systems functions and not much else. The Alt is the heart of the system, the system is built around IT, not amps or subs. 8g is fine, if it were too small it would be warm or hot to the touch. I would update the big three to start. If that doesnt fix you def need a new alt. Caps or batts will not correct.

I don't think it would kill the battery as fast as it would your alternator. The alternator is designed to as what renegadesrum said, to run basically like your fan to your A/C, and headlights. As soon as the battery is charged to what it's supposed to be, the alternator shuts off, then when the battery is down a little, the alternator kicks back on. Now if you have a system that is pulling your electrical system down, you need to upgrade your stock wiring, or stock alternator, as again renegadesrun said you should do the big 3 upgrade, it helps out ALOT.
