hi, i have an 1988 f-250 with a inline 6 cylinder. it will start up just fine, usually idles at around 1500 rpm for about 20 seconds and then the drop down, but it will not stop at its normal idle speed it just keeps going down untill it dies. if i tap the gas pedal i can keep it running for a little while. however if press the gas any more than just a touch it will die. after nursing it for several minutes it will idle but not smooth. then if i press the gas about half way way it will stutter and chug for about 15 seconds then the rpm will go up like they should. all of this is while it is sitting in the garage in neutral, it is almost imposible to drive because the engine has no power to even get moving. i have replaced the tps, evp sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. any sugestions will be helpful, i have tested many sensors and am running out of ideas. i tried to include as much information as i could, but if you need more let me know. thanks
Did you replace the Egr itself. When the EGR goes bad it has those same symptoms. Of course so do about 20 other things. You should pull your codes or if you don't have a code reader I believe you can go to Autozone and they will read them for free. Without the codes I would guess a bad EGR valve first. Good luck.
A couple of thoughts off hand are fuel and timing. You might want to check the timing and change the fuel filter to see if that helps. I would also check for cracked vacuum lines and around the intake, a leak would also effect the idle.
You can also check for trouble codes, you can have codes even if your engine light is not on. See how to check for codes at www.fordfuelinjection.com under getting trouble codes. Its easy and free. Also your Haynes manual has a ECC trouble codes section.
I'm sure someone here can give you the exact answers to the codes but if you want to take some time and knock aroung fordfuelinjection.com you can find the code definitions.
24- Intake air temperature out of range.
67- Park/neutral circuit failure (I ignore this)
Computer Memory Codes
14- Ignition pickup erratic
41- O2 reports running lean
51- Engine coolant temp sensor is too high
My thoughts:
I think your biggest two are 14 and 41. Replace your fuel filter, and test the ignition components attached to your distributor. Bad ignition pickup components could cause your fuel system to not deliver enough fuel (computer thinks engine turning slower than it really is). Clogged fuel filter could caues fuel starvation, too, however erratic ignition pickup could cause BOTH problems.
Then test/replace your temp sensors. With all those sensors out of range or erratic, check your wiring, too, if anything looks dried out or corroded.
Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I have a question, is it difficult to test the ignition components? or should I leave that to a professional. Same goes for test/replacing the temp sensors.
Did you get code 24 with a cold engine. If so I don't think you need to worry about that one also. I get that one on mine when the engine is cold. After replacing a electrical part unhook the battery ground fro a minute to reset the truck computer then run to warm up engine, then test for codes again while running.
Ps you may want to post a new post you can get more answers that way.
