Flicker

Can anyone advise what would cause my lighting to flicker with the idle? i.e. bright-dim-bright-dim.....The damn thing looks haunted!

Before you say it, new alternator and new voltage regulator.

Sounds like the idle may be too low and it's letting the regulator turn on/off??

Does it quit if you rev it up a bit??

flicker

yes, the flicker is gone when revved or when i drive, however the idle is not what i would consider extremely low for a 390; it's a steady big block droan.

that said i need to rev it up a bit to get rid of the flicker and once i let off it's back again. your train of thought is correct, however the idle removes the problem.

are there regulators that would accomodtae a low idle? i've heard extremely lumpy cars (which old hank is not even close to) that do not have this problem

do you think it could be battery related? the battery is a couple years old, i have no problems getting enough juice to turn the old boy over

any other thoughts or phyical components to address?

i replaced the VR with a new one from UAP; it looks just like the old one possibly even a re-man.

is there some way to id the difference between the two VR's?

would there be a possibility that in 72 you could have either electronic or analog igintion?

I'll check this out. Good suggestion.

Thanks.

The new electronic versions are only about 3/4" thick, where the old versions are 1-2" thick(to hold the coils/relays).
