Body seam problem

Question on my ’71 f100. There is a seam between the roof and the cab that runs from the drip rail around the back to the other drip rail. It was not filled in with lead or plastic filler and was wondering why. I tried to fill in a small area and it cracked a few weeks later. Do I need to spot weld the seam then fill in fiberglass?

I thought of doing that, but the previous paint had cracked over the sealer and looked like hell. That's why I wanted to fill the seam with a filler material.
