Temp Gage not connected?

I have an 1986 F250 6.9L, AC, 2x4, Lariat

I always wondered why the voltage gage didn't move... then one day the alternator and batteries went dead and the gage still sat in the middle.

It appears the battery/voltage gage was never connected from the Ford factory. The gage is installed in the dash but not connected. I believe my manual said the gage connects to one of the 4 leads on the voltage regulator... but my regulator does not have that lead. Only 3 leads. Double checked with the parts store, I have the correct regulator for this diesel, but no provisions for the temp gage. Any thoughts??

If your guage has a "D" and a "C" then it's an ammeter. If this is what you have, and it doesn't move very much if at all, then it's probably working. I don't think I have ever seen a factory one that actually worked very well. If you want a real indication of what's going on, buy an aftermarket voltmeter that will have numbers something like 8-18 volts on the guage face.
