It sounds like you're using Outlook Express for your e-mail. If so, there's an option in OE that starts Messenger everytime you start OE. In OE go to Tools -> Options -> General tab. If there's a check mark in the Automatically log on to Windows Messenger option, then un check it. Hope this helps.
Here's what worked for me: Just right click on that little icon on the task bar then click on "exit". It stays gone till I completely shut down the machine and restart it. Then just do it again. I don't use outlook as a default but that's the way it works with my machine using internet explorer.
You know OE is a pretty porous program security wise? You might want to look into switching to Mozilla Thunderbird. The interface is quite similar, but without the typical Microsoft flaws.
hey guys, I guess that didn't work. As soon as I do anything with OE it reopens the messenger into the tray, even though I unchecked that box...???
I might have to look into that other program.
If I'm not mistaken, there is an option under windows messenger to disable it on start-up also. I had that problem and I think that's how I stopped it. It's been almost a year ago so I don't remember to well, but check and see under messenger.
Also...under control panel....add or remove software....look to left and click on "add or remove windows components". Remove the check from the box for messenger.
