I had the same problem with turbo surge and tried wastegate mods. and eneded up putting wicked wheel in. It cured the surge completely and sounds like a little jet ingine whistle out the 4" turbo back pipe. Not loud in cab but roll the back pass. window down a bit and it is a nice sound.
i wish i would have done a search on that instead of "turbo whoosh" or noise etc... as soon as i searched wicked wheel my problem was in front of my face (several times over) for $70 and a couple hours worth of work it's definately worth a shot. i can't wait to hear my turbo whistle again and get rid of the whoosh noise and the blow off valve sound in between shifts

Adding the aftermarket wheel is going to add to the problem, not cure it.

Exactly. The big intake and exhaust with stock fuel flow slows the turbo down, which is why you make less boost with increased lag. Adding the wheel is going to slow it down further, and will probably cost you a couple more pounds of boost.
After rereading ths post I'm thinking that your only problem might be not enough fuel to go with your air flow mods. Ignoring the milage for the moment, try putting the clamp back on and see how it runs.
My turbo surge really began when I added a 60 hp chip to my 2 stage air intake and the 4" exhaust. Pulling a load and pushing on accelerator caused loud swooshing noise until I let off the throttle a little. If I punched it it would make the noise when changed gears or if I let off quickly. After wicked wheel install no more swoosh or surge with much more high end response. It runs great. The EGTs dropped a little as well when pulling a load.
ok. i'll put the clamp mod back on tonight. i also have a hypertech power programmer III on the way so i'll let you guys know tomorrow if the clamp mod helped and maybe try to do a comparison between the two. actually i think you are correct cause it was definately more noticable when i took the mod off.
ok a friend of mine actually let me borrow his predator last night. i loaded the 60hp tune and the truck feels great but unfortunately it still has the compressor surge. it's not as bad though. on the way in to work this morning i did get better gas mileage. at least thats what the overhead said. usually it reads 12-12.5 but this morning it read 17.5. hopefully this is true. i am going to order the wicked wheel and see what happens.
I've got the early '99 PSD, open element air intake, and straight pipe 3.5". I've shimmed my fpr to about 63 - 65 psi. This whooshing everyone hears, does it come from under the hood or out the tail pipe? I've noticed a loud whooshing out my tailpipe when I'm galavanting around at 1400 rpm, 2nd gear. If I let off the accelerator, it stops. If I push on the accelerator, it stops. Is this the turbo lag? Do I hear it out the tail pipe since it is straight exhaust? I guess I just noticed it while driving under an overpass here in town. Now I drive around with both windows to hear it.

17.5 is not true!! the whooshing sound on my truck sounds like the wastegate is staying open. usually happens between shifts(sounds like a blow off vavle) and in overdrive.
That's common to all chips/tuners. My O/H console generally reads 4-5 mpg higher than actual. Without the chips it's pretty accurate.

That is not compressor surge. When it's surging it sounds like a rapid fire shh, shh, shh, shh noise when under a load. If it get's bad enough you can also see the needle of the boost gauge deflecting in time with the noise.
From your descriptions I think you are hearing the normal operating sounds of the turbo, which are amplified by the aftermarket filter set-up. The stock airbox is very good at hiding most of the turbo sounds.
For some insight into the poor milage, concentrate your searches to fuel related threads. Specifically looking for "tank mod" and "pre-pump mod" to get you started.
