I want first say this is a great site. Anyway I have a 1997 F-150 4x4 and it has 104000 miles on it and I have a loud roaring nice coming from the front end. It sounds almost like the tires are out of balance but much louder. I had the wheels rotated and balanced to elimanate that though. The noise starts at about 20mph and continues until I drop below 20mph. If I'm driving straight or turning to the left I get the noise. If I'm turing to the right for example an exit ramp baring right the niose goes away. I'm pretty certain that it's the right wheel hub assembely. I'm guessing this because by turning right I'm shifting the weight of the vehicale to the left and releaving some of the pressure from the right wheel. I know that the hub assembly is the same for the left and right but I don't want to deal with removing the rotors to try it on both sides. Can any one confirm my theroy of it being the right hub assembly? Also how hard is it to remove this hub. I plan to do it this weekend. Any directions would be wonderful. Thanks for all your help.
Can you explain what the unbolts are? I'm not fimilar with them. What do they look like and do I just need to replace them? Also the steering knuckle is what turns the Hub, correct me if Im wrong. I just don't want to spend $240.00 on a new hub if it's somthing else that I can check first. Thanks for your reply.
There are 4 bolts that come in from frame side of steering knuckle that hold hub/bearing assembly.Think they are 18mm,maybe 21mm.Remove those bolts, unplug speed sensor (can't remember, but I think plug is near top of shock),remove axle nut and your 1/2 way done.Good luck
Ok so my theroy was wrong. I changed the right hub with a new hub and still had the noise. After beating on the rotor for hours trying to get it to budge I finally went and bought the largest gear puller I could find and used that to apply presure to the rotor while I taped it with a hammar. I had to do the same thing to the hub in order to get it off after I got the rotor off. Any way I changed it with the new hub and went for a test drive only to still hear the same noise. After getting back and blowing a fuse I decide to take the hub that I removed from the right side and try it on the left side. At this point I figured I had nothing to lose. I have to say that the left side went much smoother. I guess I new what worked for the right side. Any way I changed the left hub with the hub that I removed from the right side and went for another test drive and that fixed it, no more noise. It ended up being the left hub that was bad and not the right. Thanks for everyones help.
Strange, sometimes they'll fool you. Usually it would have been the right if you heard it louder turning left.
Nothing beats heat to pop that rotor loose, beating on it can damage the wheel bearing. You need something serious to heat something that big quickly enough to pop it loose though, an oxy-acetylene torch with a cutting or heating tip played around the flange of the rotor where it sits on the hub.
One of the owners of my Co. just went through the same thing today on a 01 Exploder (his own).I guess thats why they're theory's.Good you got it fixed.
