had a 1985 f150 4x4 with a 4 speed 300 6 bare bones 22-24 mpg awsome truck never any problems other than the argument with a moose (write-off)
plan to find another for a project/retirement

most reliable truck was a 1981 f250 ranger with a 460 4speed used as a work truck in the bush had a lot of repaires but was worked hard. finaly threw a rod at 430,000 km never had the heads off.had that truck for 14 years

but the nephew left his 1985 ranger 4x4 with a 4 cyl 4 speed with me while he went on hollidays that is a sweet wee truck rides nice, economical on gas, though felt like it wouldn't pull the hat off of your head, had to put a few kms on it (fishing trips).

I thought going big etc. was it but I am really considering stepping back age wise to find a comprimise in power verses economy ,also simplicity in maintinace etc.

what's your views

That F150 with the 300-6 and 4-speed sounds like a good choice to me. Maybe you can find another .

I agree. Just got another myself, 89 F150 SC 4x4, 300, granny 4 spd. Same running gear as my 84 reg cab, except the 89 has 3.54 gears (the 84 had 3.08's). I've pulled 12-13K lbs (5500-5900 Kg's) with both (16ft stock trailer & 10 cows), never saw 4th gear on the 84, but could use 4th with the 89. Now the truck's been retired from the ranch (I think the Father-in-Law got tired manual tranny's), so we brought it home after Christmas.

So anyway, I agree, the 300, w/4 or 5 spd would be my choice if I were purposely looking to buy. Though I have no experience with the 4.6L, my Dad thought it was underpowered. He had 4.6 in an explorer, but it didn't like pulling his snowmobiles (600 & 700 SkiDoo's), so he replaced his with 5.4L Expedition.

I suppose I'm biased to the 300, as I design Ag equipment, and all we use are inline's.
