manual to automatic

hey, I have a 82 f150 4x4 with the 4 speed manual transmission. I have a few ?'s about it, first what transmission is this? is it the t18? also what all would be involved in replacing the transmission with an automatic? I think I want to put the 4 speed in another project of mine, and would like to roll around town with an automatic. I would appeciate any help with this.

Hi zac,

can you give us your transmission code? You'll find the code a label which is positioned on the left door pillar or on the ID tag which is located under lower left extension-to-case screw.
I could be a Warner T18 (code F), a Warner T19 (code P) or a new process 435 -4speed (code A)
Sure, you can replace the tranny to an automatic but it's a lot of work.
Here are some job you have to do besides the main work:
deinstalling the clutch pedal,
installing the larger Automatic brake pedal,
mounting the flexplate,
pulling the, for the manual tranny needed, needlebearing out of the crank,
maybe you have to modif or changing your driveshafts and the tranny crossmember and installing the automatic shift lingage.

Believe me, it's a lot of work but nothing is unpossible.
I've done this on my Mustang.
