Hi all,
I recently bought a 94 Ranger 3.0 w/ a manual shift transfer case. I knew the case was bad so I got a used one from a B-3000 and installed it. After about a thousand miles the truck went into neutral on the highway while making some light grinding noises. I stepped on the clutch to take my exit. Still nothing. Finally after shifting down the transfer engaged in 4lo! The linkage is working on the outside, but the case wont shift out of 4 low. Does any one have any idea what failed? Also what I'm asking is is it worth it to try and fix the thing or should I just bite the bullet and buy a reman case. I still have the original case which had a broken rear case, so I have internals. Used cases are hard to find in these parts, and the weather is not going to be cooperative. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I fianally got the chance to tear the Ranger apart. Transfer case disassembly is easier than removal! What I found should worry all with 4x4s. Both transfer cases failed due to broken hoses that run from the pick up screen to the oil pump. They were brittle and completely severed resulting in no lubrication to the shaft. I believe that Borg Warner used hose that was incompatible with ATF. Luckily I had enough good parts to make one case out of two. If I had a Ranger with a 1354 transfer I would try to determine if that hose was still intact, or tear the case down and replace the hose. Just my 2 cents.
