I have a 83 f-100 with a 302 v8 auto trans. also a 1980 f-100 with 300cid straight 6 with a 3sp trans--the 302 has a bad motor--I would like to have a ford truck with a auto trans--what would be my best route to go with what I have? change the motor out of the 83 and put in the straight 6 or change the transmissions? what is the process and what do I need to do? thanks

Hi rick,

hm...whats the problem with the 302, isn't it possible to repair that engine?
It`s sounds easier to me to do it. Correct me if I'm wrong...

best I can figure is rear seal---I have not heard the truck run--my main reason on getting it was the auto trans--your right It might be easier--what would be involved in changing the rear seal--the prevous owner said it leaked oil from the rear of the motor!
thanks

The easiest thing to do would be to put the automatic behind the six. But you are going to have to buy a 6 cylinder flexplate. Swapping motors involves motor mount brackets, radiators, wiring harness, exhaust, etc. I wouldn't put much work into the 302 until you where able to run it. It would be a waste of time to replace the rear seal(if that's where the leak is) if the motor is shot and burns oil.
