how much will K&N help?

I'm looking at doing some mods on my 97 f-350 psd cc e4od, I tow a ***** trailer often but speed is not what im looking for. I was wonder how much of a gain in MPG will I see with K&N hi-flow set up, how much with new exhaust, How much together? I want to try and find out if it is realy worth it to me. so if any body has this set up tell me what sort of gains you got with the new system. thaks much J

You will notice about 3-4 MPG increase and alot more power from 1500 RPM to redline, alot more low end. now my dad has a f-150 w/the 5.4 and did the K&N FIPK and Borla exhaust w/3.55 gears and he got 3-4 MPG better....even doin 80+, and even towing, but around town, you really wont notice much of a difference because your constantly stopping and going. so i think it really is worth it

no, you will see some power gains, we felt it in my dads truck while accelerating up the onramp to the thruway, but we felt alot more power w/the exhaust as well, mostly because when you just have the air filter, your sucking in alot of air, but your not releasing it, so you wont see much improvement until the exhaust

You won't see much gains of either, mpg or power, with just the K&N; with both you might notice a little bit. The trick with both of them is to let your engine breath better, able to get more air in and get rid of the exhaust quicker, resulting in significantly cooler EGT's, which help a lot when towing. K&N probably claims 20+hp gains, but on a turbo diesel you won't see that. Exhaust will also claim about the same, and I think with both of them together you would see it. It seems like a lot of money to gain just a few hp, but it's worth it, especially if you are looking at chips or tuners, those are what will make a big difference in how your truck pulls.

Only thing it (standard filter replacement) will help is your wallet!! You will not have to keep putting new paper media filters in every 10,000 miles!!

don't even bother..... Go w/ an actual tymar intake or equivilent.... for a cheap homemake one.... NAPA FIL6637.... you need to fabricate one piece from pvc, and the other a coupling.... piece of cake....you will notice the engine is louder.... normal as i found out....

Big difference between 5.4 and a stroker, two totally different applications. That would be like trying to promote the predator to you gas guys saying up to 100 hp gains!!! As mentioned later, I think the tymar is the best available option on these motors, especially if it isn't in a city atmosphere. I'm not a big fan of the K&N in high dirt applications.

At the risk of offending some people......... as good as the K&N is for a gasser, it isn't the best choice for a turbo diesel, especially after the filter element has been cleaned a few times. The suction generated by a turbo diesel can/will draw particles through the element and into the turbo. Sure, the K&N filter reduces restriction, but at the expense of filtering ability.
Get an intake with a huge filter, so the air doesn't have to enter through a small passageway, and you can also maintain filtering ability at the same time.

Since i have out the 6637 on there... you can deffinately hear the turbo better than stock.... has a nice sound right around 1900-redline..... as in comparison to a actual tymar, i don't know.... but the price is what made me get a 6637....(credit goes to kwikkordead for the idea!!)
