I lost all forward and reverse gears all at once (fluid is clear and not burnt)
any ideas before pulling and replacing. Who has the best deal on these units if I need to replace.
eBay has a place out of Arizona that sells these for about (if I remember right) $800. I know nothing about repairing these transmissions, but I do know the computer controlls the shifting. Perhaps it's a wiring problem or fuse, etc? Good luck.
There are three no-cost things you should do first:
1) Block the wheels. Set the parking brake. Leave the engine off. Disconnect the
high voltage wire to the coil so the truck cannot start.
Crawl under the truck.
Have a helper work the shift lever. Verify that the linkage is connected to the
actuator arm on the side of the trans, and that it moves through the full travel.
2) While you are under there doing step one, remove the inspection cover from the bellhousing, allowing a view of the torque converter. Have your helper engage the starter. Verify that the torque converter turns with the engine. (It is possible the flex plate to torque converter bolts have all come loose.)
3) Put the inspection cover and coil wire back. Run a KOEO test followed by a KOER test. See if the computer is setting any codes related to the transmission.
Please accept my apologies if these suggestions seem too obvious....
nope, Ford did make an A4OD trans., for that year.. i dunno. but i do know that with a little help that trans. Can hold quite a bit of power, my buddy has one in his 1987 F-150 with a twin turbo 4.9L (hehe, bus turbos). and he has 678hp and 750tq at the rear wheels. mind you he has 4.10's and 33"super swampers. its only 2wd but, it thinks its 4wd. im currently attempting to build the same thing only with a 1992. personaly, that strait 6 is sounding better than a V8, and has pretty good gas mileage (21mpg city)
Ford never made a trans called the A4OD. In 1989 there was an AOD that was used on the 302, and there was an E4OD that was used on the 351 and larger engines. In an F350 this is most likely an E4OD.
