speedometer ???s

First of all where is the speed measured from? Is it the sensor one the rearend or is it off of the transmission tailshaft?
My next question is what in the heck is wrong with my odometer when is reads 333,998.6 miles and then resets itself to 333,976.0 miles. It will then go back to 333,998.6 and reset again. The trip reading is also way off of the wall. Is this simple fix or is there a PCM glitch going on. The truck runs really good. Thanks for the help

Sounds to me that your VSS(vehicle speed sensor) is malfunctioning. It will pick up metal shavings and start reading weird. Is your overdrive light blinking too? Does the speedometer work(this is where the speed is picked up at on the rear differental)? Give us more details and maybe we can trouble shoot it for ya.

Okay, I thought that is where the speed was measured. I have a 5 speed so I dought that my OD light is going to flash. The speedometer measures accurately and does not jump around.(I had an aerostar that the speed sensor went bad on and the speedo jumped around and the tranny shifted erratically.
I do not know how this would act since I am running a five speed instead of an auto.
I was wanting to know where the speed was measured because I am thinking of putting in an auxilary tranny and didn't want to mess with the speedometer. I had never thought that the sensor could be related to the odometer reading???? Thanks for the help. What should I expect to pay for one?

Hey tex1313, i thought that too but it's isn't. I just had to put a new rear axle in my truck, anyway, i broke the thing off and the speedo still works, just no abs. Its an ABS sensor.
