today i tried to put the 4wd on and nothing happened. it tried to engage the voltage droped for a second or 2 but the motor never sounded like it would engage. i tried to tap on it and checked the fuses nothing happened and all the fuses were good. i think the front is locked in. when i turned the front driveshaft it turned easy then got hard then easy then hard kind of like turning over an engine in the compression stage. my dad looked at it put it in the shop for about 2 hours at 75 degrees. he unpluged the wire harness from the 4wd motor and checked voltage it had voltage pluged it back in and it worked and is in 4wd now. i havent taken it out 4wd in case it wont go back in since we are to get 10 inches of snow tonight and tomarrow. What could be the problem here? could it be a hub problem or the motor going bad?
i knew i should have put some manual locking hubs in when i had them apart.
how often do you engage it? it could have just been frozen up and the change in tempatures loosened the parts up enough it could move. with electric transfercases you need to engage them and disengage them regulary otherwise they will lock up and when you do need it, it wont engage. i would just try shifting it a coulpe of times back and forth. just remember if your gonna leave it locked that you need to avoid all kinds of pavement and cement as it is very hard on your front end.
It sounds like the electric motor is going bad, I saw an explorer that went into 4wd low and wouldn't leave until I took the motor off and turned the transfer case with pliers. If the wires to the motor have voltage and engage is a no go, my vote is to replace the motor.
Good luck.
all im saying is before going to jump on to replace the motor which im sure isnt cheap, i would just run it alot back and forth, and mabey if your up to it, taking the motor off and cleaning and greasing it up. if it doesnt work then all your out is a hour of time and some grease if it does then you just saved some moola. just my .02
