I have a 260 that is .040 over I think it will clean up by just honing. If not can this motor be bored to .060 over ? Also the heads have 289 cast on the top of them is this an ok setup. And lastly will any small block bellhousing fit this block as long as it's a 5 bolt. I would like to put an np435 behind it Thanks for any help Rick
You can have it checked before you bore it. If a hone job will work, you'll be better off anyway. Thin wall motors with even thinner walls become overheated motors much easier.
Perhaps another 260 owner will pipe up.
I remember an engine book I had showed a guy "o-ringing" a 260 block, putting the big valve 289 heads and a blower on it. (published in the mid '60s) It said the 260 was the better choice for a blower motor as the 289 didn't have room for the o-rings.
Your 289 marked heads are fine---it runs good, right?
Yes, you have to find a 5 bolt bell with the tranny pattern you want. Good luck on that one. Measure it out or take it with you when tranny shopping.
Here is a site with your input shaft and tranny mount specs. Looks like it should fit a stick bell that would take a T10 or toploader.
Bored out an engine 29 cubic inches? Ummmmm....... I don't think so. That's a little less then 4 cubic inches per cylinder. With a .060" overbore on a 302, you gain about 8 cubes. Total. All 8 cylinders together.
A 306 is a 302 overbored .030', correct? This I know. You are gaining 4 cubic inches. If you double the amount of overbore, would you not double the cubic inches gained? 4+4=8 Correct? Somehow, you gained 9 cubes.
some engines can take a big bore some cant.i bored a 272 .165 over and have seen them .205 over.does anyone know the space between the cylinders on a 26o and289.i done this back in 72 on a 65 fairlane that had a 289.we needed a block and couldnt get one.we decided to chance a 260.we kept track of it for a couple of years.no problem.
