Just thought I would agree with all of your predictions and opinions of the ESOF hubs on my 03 F250. For the second time both hubs have been replaced. Both times coverd by warrenty but still, what junk. We had rain and snow over the weekend and decided I needed my 4 wheel. Turn the **** and it would shift in if it felt like it and then if it did go in I never knew how long it would stay in. Works great if you get out and lock it in. forgot to add I only have 24k on the truck. What JUNK!!!!
Yeah i have the same prob on my 01' and i just did the Warn Upgrade. Far superior to factory crap, although i do have to get out. Oh well. But hey if its covered under warranty then i would keep taking it back.

ESOF is a disappointment to say the least, ain't it?
I have to admit, though, that my hubs are as good as they were when Ford put them on...if that means anything. I have had to bribe, trick, beg, and coax my ESOF system until, I guess, it got tired of it. It works fine now...and kicks in instantly everytime I turn the ****.
Still, ESOF is a long way from being what is should be.....
I have got to ask because this topic has been on my mind since I got my 05. I noticed that sitting still the ESOF will not engage and the truck has to be moving slightly. Is this a true expectation?
If so I have to ask another question, what happens if you miscalculate the terrain and are not moving when you finally realize that you need 4wd?
I thought I read in the owners manual that spinning the rear wheels while trying to engage the 4wd was bad for the transfercase or something to that extent.
I too do not believe that is is a good idea for the back wheels to be spinning until the hubs have engaged. My brother blew both hubs out of his truck when his front tires were in a 18 inch hole while the back tires were on ice. He hit the esof and gassed it befor the hubs locked in. back wheels spun, and he actually heard both hubs self-destruct...almost simultaneously.
Granted he was 17 and driving a '87ish broncoII. The esof may be tougher or improved on the newer and bigger trucks, but I wouldn't recommend shifting the ESOF system on unless all four wheels are stopped or spinning the same speed!
My '97 works fine, usually if its not working properly it is operator erroe when i'm trying to go into 4lo without being in neutral with brake depressed. once or twice I caught it clicking in and out like it was confused and wouldn't engage, but after I let the truck roll an inch or two it locked right in with no problem. 4hi works all the time stopped or at speed.
I will be ordering it on my next 250, but I keep in mind that they may fail and are not invincible. But are great when they work
Guys read the thread over and understand what I said and why...
The question was!!! what happens if you miscalculate the terrain and are not moving when you finally realize that you need 4wd?
And the answer!!! The hubs won't click in but the tranfer case will and the axles will then turn the hubs and they will lock in after spinning the rear wheels a bit.
A BIT mind you! You don't have a choice now do you. Its either stay stuck or slip the rear wheels so the front axle turns. Its not that big of a deal if done gently.
I traced the vacuum lines on mine and didn't find any leaks. I then took out one of the hubs because i read that they can be lubed or rebuilt and might work again. When i got the hub out, i couldn't tell where the vacuum comes in on the spindle. It looked solid in there to me.
BTW-That snap ring is a major pain to get back in. I ended up grinding notches in a pair of needle nose pliers to get it back in.
Does anybody have a website or place to get the Warn hub replacements at a great price???? I've priced the Warn hubs locally and they are like $200 a pair?? Seems a bit pricy to me? I was thinking half that would be reasonable? What kind of price did you pay for your Warns?
Thanks.
Just as I stated when opening this thread, When I picked up the truck last night they had replaced BOTH of my front hubs. I do praise my service department for doing this, since it only seemed to be one that was acting up, instead of trying to fix or clean the ones that were in there. Curiously what would a set of hubs cost if I had not had my warrenty to cover it. I'm just guessing, even though the ford ESOF hubs are junk, that they are pretty pricey and with labor at 80+ dollars per hour I would imagine it to have a $500 price tag.
Has anyone actually paid for a set of these after their warrenty has ran out and had them installed by a ford dealer????? When my warrenty expires and I have to pay for them I can almost garantee there will be a set of warns in the truck.
To buy, just buy, the factory auto hubs its about 250 per side. Warns are around 200 for both. Every mechanic i know says that the auto's are junk, just my two cents.
