auxilary 3 speed

I have a 95 powerstroke with a 5 speed that is two wheel drive with 4.10 gears. I am wanting to lower my rpms at interstate speeds. I have found a spicer 3 speed unit that has a 2.35 underdrive and a .73 overdrive. The zf 5 speed ratios that I have found state OD is either .76 or .77 depending on which one you have(how do I tell?) I have run the numbers and have found that currently I am running around 73 MPH at 2700rpms. If I were to install this spicer I can run 101 mph AT 2700. Has anyone installed one of these trannies? Any advice on what I am about to do? I have looked at both other overdrives that are out there. THey are too rich for my blood. I believe I can buy the spicer and have it ready to roll for less than $500.00. Seems like a bargain to me. Let me hear why I should or should not do this. thanks

I havn't put a brownie in a truck in 30 years, but here goes: It probably is a 4000 series Spicer although it could be a real brownier (Brown & Lipp). Parts if you ever have to repair it are going to be near impossible to find. Besides the gear box you are going to need to shift it and that is accomplished by a shift tower with two sliders and two shafts that go back to the brownie. The tower should be attached with a crossmember under the cab. Then you will have to have the driveline cut and the appropriate u-joints installed. I never drove a brownie that had syncro's that were still working so get used to double clutching. when you are all finished you will be a real gear jammer. Good luck

You have a two wheel drive, which if you wanna chang gears makes it real easy. You can prolly get a set of 3.55's for that rear end for near nothing, cuz most guys want 4.10's. A buddy of mine has 3.55's and his truck will run 2300 at 80, or something real near that. and still gets 25+ mpg.

the gear swap is prolly the most pracical and easiest swap.
