Ok, I have a 99 f150 supercab shortbed 4x4 with a 5.4l v8, when my truck is doing between 40-50 mainly at 45 mph the front end wabbles, it almost feels like a tire is going to fall off or something, I had this problem a while back except it only did this when braking, found out my rotars where worped and I had some bad ball joints so I had the ball joints replaced and I had to replace the controll arms in the process because I guess it came in a kitt, the rotars where turned to get rid of the worp. It hasnt done it for at least 4 months, I know I need new shocks but this wouldn't cause the front end to shimmy when I'm driving would it? and it only does it between 40-50mph, when it happens if I remain at the same speed eventually it will stop or if I go above 50 or below 40 it will stop. Any suggestions? P.S. I'm super broke, thanks
Yeah I have 16x10" rims with 285/75/16R bf goodrich tires. No lift kit, and I have had this setup for a little over 2 years now and never had a problem until recently.
The same thing happen on my friends 1999 f150 4x4. 40,000 miles
The front tire treadware was uneven. Every other knop on the front tire was about a .150" lower than the knop in front of the other. He rotated the tires and every was fine.
Something to do with front suspension and that tire design
I have a 99 F250LD 5.4 that did the same. This was a coupe of weeks after my friend's 98 F150 4.6 went through it. Turned out the problem was related.
My friend's mechanic fussed and fumbled around for a while with suspension, tires, etc. and then finally resolved the problem to be a bad plug wire. Replacing all plugs and wires solved his.
When my truck started doing exactly what you described, I had already made an appointment to get the plugs replaced (not going to tackle that one). After getting the truck back, the shuddering was completely gone and has never reared its ugly head again.
Apparently, the engine justs gets into a dead spot at that certain RPM and misses, although I never got a check engine light (my buddy did).
If you are getting near plug replacement time anyway, might be worth checking it out.
