302's are awsome but the greatest engine I ever had the privilege to see and hear was a Boss 351 in a Mach 1. The local Ford dealer's son owned it in the 60's?. It idled like a trashcan full of bolts and had tremendous power and that beautiful Mustang body. To this day I always say if I get rich I'll own one.
There were only 1608 Boss 351s built during the 1971 model year. Better act quick, they're slim pickings. Be sure that the 5th digit in the VIN is an "R".
Yeah, I know. I guess I would be satisfied with a Boss 302. I saw a 351 for sale to some yuppies for over 100 grand. Oh, the rival kid on the block(Dad owned the local Dodge-Chrysler dealership) had a Dodge Daytona- the one with the "wing?" However, the Mach 1's reigned supreme in my book both for engineering and asthetic standards. Did they make a Mach 1 with a 428 cobra jet?

Yes they did make a Mach 1 with a 428 Cobra Jet - I believe in 69 and 70...
A buddy of mine had a red Mustang Boss 351 when I was in the Army, back in the late 70's. It meant nothing to he and his wife, and it was used primarily as a grocery getter. They lived on a clay road, never washed the car, and complained about not being able to see out the rear window all the time. I wish I had known then what I know now. I would have gladly bought something they would have been more happy with, and traded with them even up.
The 351's haven't picked up in value compared to the 302's and of course the 9'. I have yet to see one sell for anything over 45k, and it was pristine, non-resto car. Fords fastest 1/4 mile mustang excluding the boss 9' because the only times available are with slicks. I have a q-code 71 Mach 1 that everyone tries to confuse for a boss 351 for some reason. On another rare ford note my cousin has a 72 "r" code montego GT that I am first in line for when it sells.

Just keep checking around. I got one off of eBay for 900 bucks. It was just the shell with the title, but that's what I wanted since I'm chopping it up anyways.
The 71 429 Super Cobra Jets may be an easier find.
Why don't you start building the motor now? When my boss was getting a Grigg's Racing suspension I used the downtime to get most of my electrical done.

Because it will be a few years before we finish it. There is about 5 project in front of it.
