Starter relay???

I get a really fast clicking noise when I try to start my truck up. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does seem to be getting worst. It sounds like my starter relay is the source. A couple of times, I have even seen smoke coming from under my hood in that general location. Any idea what my be causing this noise? When it happens, the truck won't start, obviously. Is the relay going bad? The starter itself going bad? Or..???? I have an 81 F-250 with an aftermarket 460 engine in it. Also, the starter itself has been replaced a couple of times. I hope I've been given the right size for the engine. How could I tell?

Check the battery cable connections. Make sure they're clean and tight. Especially the ground at the battery and engine block. These systems are very picky about having a good ground.

Thanks for the info. I'll check as soon as the weather lets up enough to stand out in the snow.
