My starter????
I get a really fast clicking noise when I try to start my truck up. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does seem to be getting worst. It sounds like my starter relay is the source. A couple of times, I have even seen smoke coming from under my hood in that general location. Any idea what my be causing this noise? When it happens, the truck won't start, obviously. Is the relay going bad? The starter itself going bad? Or..???? I have an 81 F-250 with an aftermarket 460 engine in it. Also, the starter itself has been replaced a couple of times. I hope I've been given the right size for the engine. How could I tell?

It sounds like your relay is going out to me. When you change it, check your cables, (positive and negative), to see if you have corrosion built up in there. If you suspect them, change them out, they don't cost that much and they can leave you stranded if they went bad. A bad ground wire can cause a smoking relay so check all your grounds carefully as well.

The clicking noise is often indicative of insufficient voltage reaching the starter. That could be due to a weak battery. If the battery is ok check the connections . Particularly whether you have a good, clean, tight ground. The ground connection is often taken for granted. A bad ground connection can lead to a significant voltage drop.
