General performance thread for 300, and some ?s

Well first off, my main question is about trannys. Ive read that if you up the torque too much, then you need to go with the zf tranny. Its a 5sp outa a 351W, right? If so, I know someone somewhere must be selling a 6sp for the 351, wouldnt that also be compatible with the 300? That would be cool.
This is the performance section, but its full of nothing but the really old 2 stickies, and questions about problems, yes i guess it is engine troubleshooting too, but i want to go fast lol.
Another question i have is about the fuel pressure regulator. Ive heard that at stock, the vehicle can only support like 170 or 180 HP because injectors are small and rail pressure is too low. Is this correct? If so, do any standard FPRs for fords work?
Intake manifold. I would like a performance one, i cant find one, do they even make them for the fuel injected 300?
Headers, for speed, long tube or short.
MSD, Is it worth the 400 $ or watever for box, coils, and all that stuff?

Finally, HORSEPOWER NUMBERS, IF YOUVE DYNOED IT, OR EVEN JUST HAVE A GTECH PRO COMP OR WATEVER, PLZ POST YOUR FUEL TYPE (EFI OR CARBED), YOUR TRANNY, YOUR REAR END GEAR AND SO FORTH. Is it worth my money to sink 2 or 3 K in as a high school student for a novelty that can compete against ricers, or should i just get a crate 302 @ 320 HP @ 2,3000 $?

They do make 6 speed trannies for SBF's but it would require some other modifications to make it work in a truck. IMO, more money and effort than it would be worth. Go to summitracing.com and jegs.com get the phone numbers and ask them to send you a free catalog

You can modify a SBF fuel psi regulator to work on the I-6, do a search something should pop up. The injectors for the most part are interchangable between the ford efi engines.

There are no aftermarket intakes for the 4.9. You could however get creative and have a metal shop make you one...one method would be to purchase a 4bbl carbed intake for the I-6 and have injector bungs welded into the ends of the runners like the efi and use an adapter (or "elbow") to attach a throttle body. The v-8 folks have been doing this for years, so the "elbow" is available and the injector bungs can be purchase as well. Only drawback to this is the money you'll need to pay to have it done.

Longtube

MSD is great if you need a rev limiter or have the money to blow, otherwise your stock unit will support what the 4.9 can dish out...unless you plan on using a supercharger, turbocharger or nitrous oxide, then it might be a good idea to get the aftermarket unit.

If you have no emissions then you should consider the v-8 swap, check the mustang classifieds and local junkyards a 302 roller shortblock in usable condition is cheap, slap the best heads you can afford onto that block and you've got some get up and go. 351w would be better but from my experience they aren't as easily found. Stock form I like the I-6 over the 302 but the second you wanna go faster, the aftermarket has the 302 covered, besides the mustang crowd is always changing things to go faster, so you have a source for used go fast parts at a somewhat reasonable price.

Here is a thought, keep your truck stock, take that $3000 and go pick up a mustang or v-8 ranger, they are out there for 2-3000 sometimes less, depends on who needs money now, then you will be able to go faster with less motor, as you know a lighter vehicle needs less hp and tq to move over a certain distance - in a certain amount of time, as compared to a fullsize truck.

Good luck

Installing a 6 speed will require a lot of fabrication. Most available 6 speeds are available in many different configurations, so you would be ahead to pick one that is as close to what you need as possible.

There are several performance threads on here, just have to search for them. The sticky used to mainly be for the carb engines, but I haven't read through it in a while.

The stock fuel system is good to about 230-240 hp, but it will be on the ragged edge and willo require some computer work to get it up that high. I run 19 lb injectors and a Crane adjustable regulator for a 5.0 on my truck and am fairly happy with it. The injectors go right in; the regulator reuires a custom hold down bracket of some sort. There's pics in my gallery.

There is nothing off the shelf available to replace the EFI intake. In the rpm range the 4.9 operates in, there probably isn't much there to improve on. I have been working on modifying the stock intake as time and budget allow, but it has been slow. Maybe I'll get it done someday.....

Short tube headers are a waste. The Hedmans work well. No header is a true bolt on. I have written novels about putting headers on the 4.9. You should be able to find them with a search.

The MSD help the response a little, but I didn't notice any power increase when I added it. I got the 6A box and TFI coil. The $200 spent on this probably could have been spent more effectively elsewhere. However, if you are planning to add compression or artificial aspiration in the future it will be a necessity.

My truck dyno'd 145 hp and 272 ft-lbs at the rear wheels. The 145 hp was at 3100 rpm and the 272 ft-lbs was at 2100. I should also mention that it was within 3 ft-lbs of peak from 1500 rpm (where the run started) through 3000 rpm (where is starts suffocation). It is more of a torque line than a torque curve. That is about 165 hp and 313 ft-lbs at the flywheel. Also have been 16.8@77mph in the 1/4. Truck is a 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat regular cab short bed, 5 speed 3.08 gear. Mods are Hedman headers with 3" single exhaust, 19 lb injectors, adjustable FPR, MSD 6a and coil. This is with a 260k+mile engine.
