Clue less!!!!

I have a 1986 Ford 150 with the 4.9 liter. I dont drive the truck everyday. I took it out the other day and it ran rough, whick isn't really new. It backfired a few times and then seemed to really run rough. When I got it home The exhaust manifold was bright orange (hot).... I had some other issues with it, rear main leaking and high mileage so I pulled the motor. Timing gears, distibutor, plugs ect looked fine. The carb. bottom plate was loose, bit it didnt appear to be leaking. Any ideas of what made the engine super heat the manifold???? The heat sensor "flap" in the exhaust near the exhaust puipe was also free and working. Any ideas fellas????? Thanks, Pete

carbs on those engines are known for loosening themselves, mine needs tightened every other oil change, no idea about why it got so hot though my truck has had the temp gauge maxed out due to a busted hose and it never got hot enough to make the manifolds glow. one vehicle i did see do that was a Z28 camaro because the timing was way off and the owner of the car was doing 130 for about 3 miles

The timing was fine. I thought I may have lost a distributor gear, but that was all fine. Cap rotor bushings everything fine.... Those carbs do suck. I can't believe that theyare just a 1bbl and a reman one is almost $400 for a Ca. model. Does Holley make a carb for these trucks with Ca. specs???

There is a wire at the distributor (spout connector) which you disconnect to set/check the ignition timing. This disables the computer and retards the timing back to base setting.
If this wire is left disconnected or for some reason or another your timing does not advance, after a few minutes at a high idle (or above) your exhaust manifold (s) will glow red!
This is indicative of retarded timing!
With a timing light, check to see if the computer is advancing the timing with the RPM, if you have a "dial back" adjustable timing light, check what you are getting for "total" advance at approx 3000 RPM

sorry it took me so long to reply 8 lugs.. I was out of town. When I took the engine out I know that spout connecter wire was connected. I will try checking the advance with higher rpms and see if the timing is advancing. If it does not, does that indicate a computer issue ??? Thanks for the advice. Pete

The hot exhaust manifold could also be from a plugged up exhaust, or specifically a plugged up cat. I would have tried just taking the exhaust loose from the manifold and driving it with it open, that would tell you. A plugged exhaust could also be the cause of some other problems too.
