XM is the big boy on the satilitte radio block with 3.5 million subscribers and added another 1.3 during the Christmas sale period. I've had it for 2 years and never listen to am/fm anymore. No need , xm has all and more that I want.
I haven't seen much reason to invest in either of them. I only listen to the radio in my car and I'm only in my car about 6 hours a week, I'm in town 99% of the time and always receive a strong signal from the stations I listen to most often. When I'm not listening to them, I'll listen to mp3's or CD's. Not much reason to buy into satellite.
Now if I travelled a lot like our sales reps do, I'd probably look into satellite radio.
I've had Sirius for about 3 weeks now and I love it. I previewed both XM and Sirius online for 3 days before deciding which one to buy. I picked Sirius because they had a better selection of the type of music and talk shows that I like.

I drive 10-11 hours a day 5 days a week all over the country. So it is very logical for me. Everytime a good some came on the radio it went to static. Not no more though.
I personally think within the next 5 years XM & Sirius will end up merging or there will be a corporate take over. Like what has been said XM has 3.5 million customers & growing daily. I think Sirius just past the 1 million mark not to long ago.
I gave my Mother a a XM radio for Christmas. She has always been amazed with mine & tried to steal it at one time. I installed it for her last night & she is in seventh heaven. She paticularly likes channel 164.
I went with Sirius as a x-mas present to my wife and I. I chose Sirius over XM mainly to get the NFL games. I do hope they merge one day, because I sure would like the MLB, which XM is adding for 2005.
Haven't played my radio or CD's since mine was installed on X-Mas eve. Gotta get another one for my Z car as well.
I don't drive long enough to feel the need to pay to listen to the radio, so it's neither for me. For guys who go on longroad trips frequently though, I think It'd be a good investment.
I've got Sirius, and it's been great. I picked up the home dock too, so I just move the receiver from my truck to my stereo inside when I get home. It works really well.
I picked Sirius over XM mostly because Sirius has the NFL games, which was a big deal to me. I liked the channel selection a little better on Sirius as well. XM seems to have slightly deeper playlists, though, compared to Sirius. I channel hop a lot, so that's not that much of an issue for me.
My brother had Sirius, and switched to XM, just because he liked the looks of a particular XM receiver. After having both, he says he doesn't care which one he has. There's so much music on either one that it doesn't really matter.
Both are excellent, and you really can't go wrong with either one.
It all depends on the quality you want. Sirius is all about music and sports. They are based in NYC which is the epicenter of music. XM is based in DC... not a lot going on there music wise. Sirius has NFL (local anouncers!!!), NBA, NHL... etc. XM has MLB.
Sirius will have Howard Stern in 2006!
Plus Sirius has 3 high altitude satellites, which provide much better coverage than XM.
XM is only more popular because they were in the market first, not because of their quality.
Working at Circiut City for quite some you, you get a lot of these questions.
XM and Sirius are comparable in quality and reception. XM is more torwards music, NCAA football, and Nascar. Sirius is a tad more torwards sports and talkshows. Sirius is big on NFL and has NPR.
Not to mention XM is cheaper. XM = $9.99/month. Sirius = $12.95/month. Both have a $15 activation fee.
Call Circuit City's Roadshop and see if they still have the Prepaid Service Cards for XM. Basically you pay for service in advance and waive the activation fee. I belive they have them in $30, $50, $80, and $130.
I am partial to XM simply because it's cheaper, I like their receivers better (even though I'll be going with direct link), I like their stations better, and that's what we played in the Roadshop.
I have sirius on my my tv satellite and like it. I usually only listen to it when I am working around the house. They play music on there all day that I only can get once a week for 2 hours in the early morning on a regular station.
I just received a Delphi Roady2 XM receiver for XMas. The factors of which service you want: which sports you like. I like XM for baseball, NASCAR, and Big Ten. For talk I listen to XM166 (America Right).
The hosts on the music channels don't blab a lot, and you don't get 7-10 minutes of commercials at the top of the hour like on terrestrial radio.
