steering column problem

steering column problem
I have heard this is a common problem for this generation 1989. the key falls forward and does not spring back to the on position.The connecting rod moves freely and does not appear to be broken.can anyone give advice on what the problem is?sorry my truck is a 1989 f-150 with tilt wheel
