electrical gremlins

I have a couple of problems, hopefully someone can help me with. To begin, I have a 2001 F250 CC 7.3L with an auto trans. I washed down the motor Wednesday, then took it out to warm up, and dry off any water left on the motor. As I was driving, every time I would apply the brakes and release them, my speedometer would drop out just for a split second. I think it was corresponding with the brake lights activating, and de activating. Since then, my speedometer has stopped working altogether, except once in a while it will work for a few minutes in the morning. My cruise control is still working fine, Is there 2 different speed sensors for this, and where would they be located?

My second problem is that my overdrive light started blinking Friday night. I can drop it out of overdrive, and put it back into overdive with no problems. This blinking just lasted for maybe 10 minutes or so, then stopped blinking. no problem with that since then. Anyone have any advice??

Sounds like your VSS on the rear end my have went bad and that is why you have no speedo and OD light flashing. Try and pull the VSS off the rear end and clean the tip off and reinstall it and see if is works.

I cleaned the VSS and that didn't help. Should the cruise control still work if that went out? Any other ideas? I may just try changing that and see if that helps, but hate to spend money if not needed, and i hate just changing out parts.

You're right , if it were the VSS the cruise wouldn't work . Might be an electrical connector or in the speedometer head . Did this all happen after you washed the motor or did you have the problem before ? If it all started after , you may have moisture in a sensor or connection . Electrical problems are a real PITA !

You might want to check the electrical connetors for moisture. I suspect it is a result of washing the motor. A few days of driving may dry it out on it's own.

This did start immediatly after washing my motor, its been almost a week now, and as far as i can see, everything is dry under the hood. I'll try unplugging some of the connectors under the hood, and blow them out. Maybe that will help. The odd thing is , it will usually work when i first start up in the morning, then drop out after a minute or so.. Thanks for the replies.

There should be a rubber seal in each connector assembly. One for each male and female. Make sure the seal is there both before and after.
