i have an 84 f-150 it has a 2 barrel carb it's a 302 engine with manual choke can i change this to a 4 barrel without changing the intake. and it runs terrible like it's starving for power.
While its entirely possible to get a carb adapter and put a 4bbl on that, it will restrict the flow of the carb. If its stumbling when you try to accelerate from a dead stop i'd look at my accel pump. If the rod isn't adjusted properly or its leaking it will cause the truck to fall flat on its face. If you want to go 4bbl i would get the proper intake first..or if you have the carb on hand and want to see if its your problem, pop down to your local auto parts store and get a 2 to 4 carb adapter, they shouldn't be over $35
Force yourself to get the intake. I think you will be very disappointed with the performance and fit of an adapter. You don't even have to pull the distributor, just drain the water. The only big issue is money(I know about that very well).
Jeff I have subscribed to this forum because I am having problems with my carb on a 1980 F100Van. The van wouldn't start unless I pumped and pumped pedal. It also completly stopped running at an idle. On the road, above an idle, it seems to run great. Hoping the problem was not the carb but the fuel pump, I put in a new fuel pump. I noticed some of the hoses had fine cracks and replaced all fuel hoses from tanks to carb. I noticed a metal tube coming from exhaust manifold up to carb and almost even with adapter plate for carb . This tube is sealed off. It doesn't go anywhere. I went into Chiltons and one other large manual to find a diagram that would tell me what went where. I could not find anything to tell me where all the tubing went. I have a single barrel carb and all should be simple. It is difficult to start and I still need to pump and pump the gas to get it to start up initially. The flap on the front of the air cleaner appears to be wide open when starting.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Jeff
Jeff, when it is cold(has sit overnight) go out and take the aircleaner off. Take your hand and push the throttle to wide open. A flapper door in the top of the carb should completely shut(this is the choke). If it doesn't, and your carb has a large round black housing on the side, loosen the black housing and turn it in the direction of the arrow on the side of the housing that says "richer". Turn it till the choke just closes. See if it will start better. I am suspicious though, that somebody may have disengaged it because you may have another problem. If after you get it going, the truck wants to bog down and puff out black smoke, this means the choke is not opening up when it gets warm. This is partly the job of that mysterious metal tube.
The metal tube hooks to the carb/choke housing area, and actually sucks air(small controlled vacuum leak). It's supposed to suck warm air from the exhaust manifold up into the choke housing to help the choke pull open after you get going down the road.
