check engine light

I have a '99 Explorer Sport. It has 72k on it, 4.0 ohv, with a 5spd. My check engine light just came on the other day. I reset the computer, ie, unhooked the battery, and it was fine for about 50 miles or so then it came back on. It seems to run ok, but the gas mileage is sorta suffering. Is there any common problem these things have that might be causing this? I know this is a little vaque but any inputs are appreciated.

Try going to Autozone or Advanced Auto they will usually read your codes for free and tell you whats wrong.

Yep, reseting the computer doesn't address the issue. Having the codes read is the place to start, AutoZone will do it for free if the check engine light is on.

while your at autozone you may wanna check your gas cap as well. as a bad one will trigger a check engine lite as well.

Hi there, Same thing happen to me. I have a 98 Explorer EB edition. You can reset it & it will come back on after about 50 miles. My checked out to be a sensor bad on the Convertor. It's 5 on there so you'll have to determine which one it is in order to change the right one or not. AutoZone will test it for FREE of chrage. Hope this helps!
