I have a 96' 2wd 3.0l Ranger. It has recently been difficult to start. The fuel injection has been serviced less than 10,000 miles ago and spark plugs have also been changed recently. The check engine light has now come on as well. I went to autozone to have the codes read and the code said Camshaft Position Sensor malfunction.
So I went ahead and got a new sensor. Upon looking in the Chilton I realized changing the sensor was a little more involved than I thought. After more consideration I was wondering if anyone knew of something else that would cause the computer to give that code. Could a problem in the fuel line or with the fuel pump cause this? Is there something more simple I should try before replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor?
I was thinking about changing the fuel filter to see if that made a difference. It was changed about 30,000 miles ago.

If the sensor went bad then its easy to change out. Just pull the two bolts and disconnect the wires that run to it. Now if the sensor is all chewed up then you have to replace the whole shaft and sensor. Its not that big of a project. Just follow the books instructions. For the sensor your looking at $10.00 for the snesor. For the shaft, wich is a ford only item. It can be from $185 (what i paid for it) up to +$400 is what some of the closer stealer ships wanted for it.
If I am only replacing the sensor, do I have to worry about findind TDC and using the "special tool" to align the shaft? I was a little unclear if that procedure was for replacing the sensor or the whole shaft.
if your just replacing the sensor then no its just remove and replace.
but what normaly happens is the metal pick up bends and destroys the sensor
so the shaft needs to be replaced. as far a the tool. i just called around the parts stores. it was like $35
I was able to put the old sensor back on and started the truck fine. The check engine light is still on of course. Will I be doing the engine harm if I continue to drive the truck even just a short distance to a shop or to go pick up a new shaft?
about the only place your gonna find a shaft is from ford. its gonna run you anyware from $185(what i paid for mine) to +$400(dealer down the street from me).
as for harm to the motor got me. i really dont see that it could but you never really know.
I have been getting the sensors - shaft and all - from NAPA for considerably less cost than Ford. They are listed in the NapaOnLine website however the local NAPA jobber charges me considerably less.
Their website seems to be misbehaving or is receiving its periodic LOF ha ha. Napa calls it an Ignition Camshaft Sensor. It is an Echlin part. When their website has its new filter and oil installed I'll try again for you.
I was able to find the sensor. I was wondering about the shaft. In the Chilton there is a diagram that points to a camshaft sychronizer but I can't find anything under that either.
