Why are the tail gates on a 2003 4x2 so heavy? Are they just as heavy on a 4x4? Or are 4x2's tailgates heavier for traction reasons? I mean mine is very heavy, and NOT safe of a younger child to open because of the weight. It's not a major concern, just curious.
Now on a 2004 (two thousand FOUR) 4x4, the tailgates are light as can be. Do they lighten then up for gas mileage reasons?
The new f150's have a spring (or torsion bar, not sure) mechanism that helps so it's not actually lighter it just feels that way. I'm glad the tailgate is so sturdy, but you're right little kids shouldn't mess with it. Better to keep it locked just to be safe.
They're just as heavy on 4x4's. Mine can be a biotch to lift up if I'm tired or simply don't feel like doing it, but I'm glad they're sturdy. Whenever those little ricers in their hondas rear-end you cuz day be talkin to day peeps on da cell phone, their car gets totalled and you have a bent bumper. I've seen it ALL too many times. End of story.
On my 2001 F150 the tailgate weighs 50lbs. I just weighed it prior to posting this reply.
It was easy to do as the tailgate lives under the bed since I have one of those ARE caps with the molded rear door. I think the tailgate just feels like it weighs more because it's awkward to handle when off the truck.
