I have a 89 2.3 dual plug and the check ingine light comes on sometimes after i let off the excelleration like today. I left home and the light was on and drove to qt for some hangover remedy. restarted the truck and the light came on but after steady driving for about 5 minutes then let off gas to turn and the light came on.
i know codes are throttle kicker, dual plug inlet failure and converter cluth silenoid. i checked all the connections to the coil packs and they are fine. by curiousity i unplugged the 02 sensor first thing in the morning yesterday when it was cold and drove it for about 15-20 minutes and the light stayed off until i returned home. i turned off the truck, waited 2-3 minutes then started it again and the check engine light came back on. could it be the 02 sensor even the no codes came up for it?
it was a koeo code 88.. electric fan drive(edf) failure or, (cco)-converter clutch override solenoid failure or, (dis)distributorlessignition system problems-loss of dual plug control, or throttle kicker (tk)solenoid failure-cicuit failure.
these are the exact codes it says in the "acetron code scanner i bought for $30 at parts store. i also had it hooked up by a dealer and the same 88 came up but they said they don't know the problem. i would have to do alot of tests in order to find problem and they said it could cost upwords to a $grand....ouch
i can fix myself if i only new the problem

I think all you have to worry about with that code is the DIS system. CCO is for the 2.3L turbo, never heard of the throttle kicker.
is it wet or damp at all where you live?
i got that code once last summer when it was damp out and my truck was acting up. once it dried up, my problem were gone. never got the code again.
just a thought

If you have an auto tranny, does it go into overdrive?
I'm leaning towards an ignition problem, have you looked at the troubleshooting information for a 2.3L DIS in the tech info thread at the top of this froum.
when the check engine light is OFF the truck will run great and shift normal until it gets really warmed up then the overdrive (last shift is slow)will not shift into place, maybe 15-20 minutes. when the light is ON the truck is still drivable but has lost alot of power like its only running on 4 plugs or something. again you can tell when it gets warmed up cuz it will start shifting different, maybe 15- 20 minutes.
Sounds like a possible vaccum leak. I've had that problem before with the engine running rough and auto tranny not shifting properly. Turned out to be a simple vaccum leak. Check all your vac lines while the engine is running. Don't put your hand in the fan or belts!
