Weird noise

I just changed the tranny fluid in my 95 M5OD to Quaker State Synthetic ATF for 4x4's. The crap that came out was black and sludge filled. Obviously hasn't been changed in a long long long time (truck has 86,000 miles). Well... now when I let the clutch out in second gear there is a weird vibrating/moaning noise for about 5 sec and then nothing. It still runs great in all gears so what gives. I also just changed the oil, but that hasn't affected anything before. So any ideas would be appreciated.

By 'nothing' you mean no motion, or the noise stops? You've probably got a bearing going out that was cushioned by the black sludge (guess where that junk came from?) and now it is able to move freely letting you hear/feel the excess bearing roughness. Synthetics tend to be thinner than comparable organic oils. You might try changing back to organic and see what it does.

What if I were to take out about 1/2 of the synthetic and replace it with some conventional ATF? Would this make a monster mixture that would do no good at all or would I get the best of both worlds? And is just replacing with conventional ATF a temporary solution that won't solve anything until it blows on me?

The point is the synthetic didn't harm anything - it's only letting you feel the worn bearing. The wear was there before, you just didn't know it. Synthetics have a way of cleaning out sludge or rather holding it in suspension better.

Changing the fluid would just be a temporary 'fix' to quiet something that will ultimately have to be dealt with.

Most synthetics are fully compatible with organic lubricants so it won't hurt, but probably won't help either. I only suggested it as a troubleshooting measure. Organics tend to be thicker so it might dampen the vibration - but also won't cure it.

So should I just let it be until it goes or will changing back to organic make it last longer? There is no shaking or shuddering it just sounds like something is, but no feel in the pedals, wheel, or stick.

Any chance its the throw out bearing thats making the noise? Thats another possibility. If it was a bearing going out, you'd feel the vibration in the gearshift.

I'd probably let the synthetic fluid alone and not mess with it.
