Not to be a smart ***, but why would u consider this large of a truck with only a v-6 in it? Both the 4.6 and 5.4 engines aren't really the best in speed as they are now and those are the v-8 engines!! I can only imagin how slow the v-6 would be and would not consider that engine at all. That's just my 02 cents. Go with one of the v-8 engines, you will be a lot happier! Goodluck!
I test drove a V-6 with manual transmission in 1994, and it seemed to be adequate.
But -- add 5-600 pounds, and an automatic transmission, and it probably just wouldn't work. I have the 4.6L V-8, and it runs real good. But I wouldn't want to try it with a V-6.
Go test drive the V6 and see for yourself. I have an STX, with the V6, regular cab/short box, I have no complaints with the acceration, and am very happy with the performance, only have about 700 miles on it so won't comment on gas mileage, too early to tell. I don't own any trailers/boats etc. so towing really wasn't a consideration.
I had the 4.2 v-6 in a '99 scab 2wd. My '04 has the 4.6 v-8 in a scab 4x4 and the mileage is actually better. Towing wise, I have 16.5 boat (1500- 2000 lbs???) and the v-8 is alot better in towing. I don't even feel the boat behind me when towing.
i had a 97 with the 4.2L V6....more pep than you would guess...but i wouldnt tow or do any heavy duty work with it. gas mileage was not any better than my 5.4L...the smaller engine works harder so it balanced out
I thought ford did away with the V6 engine on the F150 starting in 04???

I just bought a 2005 v6 stx. it runs great, as well as the v8 2002 i test drove. haven't towed anything and haven't owned it long enough for gas mileage. I love it so far though.
My thoughts were that the V-6 might be a little lighter than one of the eights, and that it might get just a little better gas mileage.
Sounds like the V-6 /auto trans combo might be fine for around town and regular interstate driving, but for towing or hauling, the 4.6 is worth the additional $650.
Local dealers sell (stock) F-150 Work Trucks with the towing package in both V-6 and V-8.
