Question I need opinions

I am lookiong at a 1997 F150 4X4. It is a good looking clean truck, reg cab, short bed. It has the 4.6l engine and automatic tranny. 120,000 miles. As far as I can tell there are no oil leaks or engine noises. The asking price is 5000. I have been doing research to try to find out if there are any problems that are likely to occur in the near future. I dont want to buy it then find out the transmission is on its way out or something major like that. I know there is no way to tell for sure but maybe there is information or opinions on things to look out for. Any opinions or advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Well, it really depends on how it was treated. That year of truck hasn't had any real common problems, and the trannies are normally good for 150,000+. There was a big problem with the '97 6 cyl engines, but the 4.6 is a solid engine, and it should last for many more miles.

For $5000, if it's what you like, I'd get it.

I agree. I just paid 8k for my 1997 Supercab XLT 4x4 with the 4.6. It too has 120,000 well cared for miles. Runs like a champ and I hope to keep it for several years. 5k sounds good if it was well maintained. Good luck!

You guys are lucky, I've had nothing but problems with my 97 XLT 4.6l 4x4. right now I'm having power steering and O2 sensor problems. However, I think the previous owner mistreated the truck. He said that after 92,000 miles, he never changed the diff oil and didn't pay any attention to the fluid levels......EVER. Of course, I had to find out about this AFTER I bought the truck.
