At times, mostly when cold, I will go and try to start my truck, but it will 'click' instead of turning over. This has been going on for a while. Sometimes it clicks once and then I try to start it again and it works fine. Other times, it will click for like 10 times.
Battery is new, ground wiring is new. Still does it. I was gonna run a whole new positive wire since my terminal is very old, but I have no idea where the wires go. And I don't want to use one of those 'clamp-on' style terminals.
Could be starter or solenoids, but the red power cable goes from the battery, to the alternator, to the starter, and to the solenoid on the fender next to the battery.
Before checking your Starter Solenoid. Make sure your battery terminals are clean. Pull off the leads and use a wire brush tool or steel wool to clean both the posts and the leads.
Battery is only around 3 weeks old so posts are pretty new and clean. The positive terminal has 2 red wires coming out of it. Looks like one goes straight to the solenoid. I try to follow the other one, but I lose it in a big jumble of wire loom. So im guessing it could go to the starter or alternator.
93GreenF150,
By new ground wiring do you mean block to firewall and other engine chassis grounds? A loose engine to body ground is what brought me to this forum. Can you bench text your starter? Just remove and place on bench in vise (carefully) and take your ground jumper to a flange and the hot jumper to the solenoid and see how she turns over. You should be able to see the torquing a bit even in the vise. Also on the '96 Bronco had the click only issues and it was the fender wall solenoid at the end that was the culprit. Good luck and Happy New Year, Oh and go Horns!

New ground wires: From battery to body (to the left of battery, has a small bolt holding it on). Also from battery to engine block. I noticed that from factory wiring, the ground wire goes: Engine->Body(wire bolted in)->Battery. I skipped that body bolt-in and wired it sttraight to the engine block. No problems at all.
This problem isn't a huge deal as the truck can start flawlessly for weeks, but it just annoys me when this click happens. I'll check the starter too see if its tight and grounded good.
