I have a 1997 F-250 HD with 460 cid, I want to put a tachometer
in it. My question is did Ford install a Tach as an option in this
year truck? I would like a factory installation as opposed to an add
on.
Looking through car-part.com, you have quite a few options for a tach cluster for the gassers.
Just pull the tachless cluster out and swap right in.
I know for the Rangers, you can just slide out the speedo/odo section and swap the one with the correct mileage right in place. That came from the Haynes manual. So, before trying to pull needles, check on that option.
I put one in a 95, and we got the dash out of a 93, and there was a slight change in the way ford wired it and we ended up not having an amp light in the dash so the alternator didn't charge, cuz it uses the light to excite the generator field until the alternator gets spinning. also you will have to pull the two apart and make sure you use the same speedometer that came with your truck, if you want your milage to be right, the numbers are not stored in the computer, just the speedometer, they pull right out and slip back in real easy. another thing to do while your in there is change the dash lights to blue instead of the white, makes your needles turn blue, here is the thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=323220
so to make a short story longer, make sure you get one out of the same year truck, to save yourself from the hassle I had to go through. otherwise it will be a direct fit. where in the country are you, I know where there are a few gas guage clusters around here, if you cant find one.
Thank you all for the info, now I can start checking wrecking
yards & retailers for the best retrofit. The wrecking yards are a
long way off, about 130 miles ,which one reason I posted
my request.
Thanks again
